Who Will Provide Support And Guide Discussions?
In a peer support group, members support each other. You can choose the best approach for your group from the following options:
Group discussions managed by a facilitator:
- An individual can guide discussions, encourage participation, and manage disagreements.
- Groups can have one or more facilitators (also called moderators or guides).
- It is helpful if the facilitator has experienced a stroke themselves. This allows them to understand member experiences and guide discussions with empathy and knowledge.
Group discussions managed by members:
- Some groups choose not to have a facilitator.
- Members manage discussions themselves.
- Establish rules for discussions, such as taking turns, managing disagreements, and keeping discussions on track.
Group discussions managed by a trained professional:
- Some groups use trained professionals (therapists, social workers, etc.) to lead discussions.
- This choice may involve added costs.
Tip: Review the Facilitator’s Guide to learn more about the role of a facilitator and how to manage common peer support group challenges.
