Before starting a new peer support group, check to see if there is already one in your community that you could join. It’s a good idea to look around and see what already exists. 

You can try to:

  • Talk to your healthcare or social service team.
  • Look for information on groups in local program guides.
  • Ask your doctor, stroke team, stroke navigator, or social worker about local peer support groups.
  • Connect with local stroke organizations like March of Dimes Canada, Heart & Stroke, etc.
  • Search online for “peer support stroke group” along with your city, town, or province.
  • You might find a local group or a virtual group you can join from anywhere.

If you find a group that fits your needs, reach out and ask about joining. If you can’t find a group that works for you, move on to the next step.
