How Can I Support Members With Communication Difficulties?
Some people may have trouble talking, reading, writing, or understanding after a stroke. This does not mean they are less intelligent.
Here’s how to help:
- Treat them with respect and be patient.
- Speak slowly, clearly, and use short sentences.
- Use a calm, natural tone and let them see your lips.
- Have markers, paper, or a whiteboard ready. Write big key words, draw, or point to things.
- Use your hands and face to show what you mean.
- Stick to one topic at a time.
- Use yes or no questions and give them time to answer.
- Provide options they can point to, like yes, no, or I don’t know.
- Pay attention to their face and actions to understand what they might mean. If they use the wrong word, try to figure out what they are trying to say.
- Confirm what you think they have said and ask if they have more to add before moving on. Offer to take a break and try again later if needed.
Tip: Supporting people with aphasia or other communication difficulties takes practice. Consider extra training in this area.
