Having A Facilitator Guide Discussions

A facilitator helps keep the group focused, handles tough conversations, and ensures discussions stay on track.

Here are four ways to manage this role:

  • No Facilitator: The group can manage discussions on their own. If so, set clear rules for respectful talk and handling disagreements.
  • Members as Facilitators: Group members can volunteer to guide discussions.
  • Non-Members as Facilitators: Experienced individuals, who have led other peer support groups and have lived experience, can guide discussions.
  • Trained Professional as Facilitator: A trained professional, like a counselor or social worker, may lead the group.
